New mercury-free batteries to be entirely phased in by June 2011

Have you heard about the new mercury-free batteries for hearing aids? I learned something about them recently that I thought you should know. Apparently, the current batteries (zinc-air) have approximately 10% mercury in them. These new ones only have a trace of mercury. Battery manufacturers are reporting that they will be changing to the mercury-free batteries entirely by June 2011. With this new type of battery there have been a few reports of hearing aid low battery alarm beeps going off and falsely indicating a low battery when the battery is only 1 or 2 days old. Please let me know if you have any issues with these new batteries, so that I can keep informing patients about what to expect.
