Hearing loss has an effect on earnings and unemployment rates

A recent survey conducted by the Better Hearing Institute looked at more than 40,000 households and found that hearing loss has an effect on earnings and unemployment rates. Here are some main points:

  • Persons with untreated hearing loss lose as much as $30,000 annually depending on their degree of hearing loss as compared to persons with out hearing loss.

  • Hearing aids were shown to mitigate the impact of income loss by 90 - 100% for milder hearing losses and by 65 - 77% for moderate to severe losses.

  • Persons with severe hearing loss had unemployment rates dobule that of the normal hearing population and nearly double that of their aided peers.
