Recent study shows relationships are failing because of untreated hearing loss

A recent British study surveyed 1,500 hearing-impaired people over the age of 55. It showed that relationships are failing because of untreated hearing loss.  Here are some statistics taken from the study:

  • Almost 1 in 2 (44% of people) said that relationships with their spouse/friends/family had suffered because they can't hear properly.

  • 34% have lost touch with friends, and in some cases seen marriages fall apart, due to breakdown in communication caused by hearing loss.

  • 69% said their hearing loss hinders their ability to take part in everyday conversations with family/friends.

Also, a US survey of baby boomers done in 2007 by Energizer Battery revealed these stats:

  • 48% said their marriages have suffered because of hearing loss.

  • 65% said they feel annoyed when their spouse cannot hear them.
